Beauty and Self-Care at Home
Quarantine Day 174…? Beauty and self-care are taking a backseat to health and well-being. While we are all doing our best to be responsible and social distancing, most of us are suffering from overgrown nails, wild and dry hair, and all-day pajamas. Nail shops are closed. Beauticians aren’t taking clients. And what are we supposed to do about our eyebrows, which probably look more like unibrows now?! What if I told you that there was a way to take care of some of these things by ourselves until outside opens back up? Check out some of my favorite beauty products that can help us all at home.
Skincare Products
I’ve covered some of my favorite skincare products in another post, but these products are really good to try while we’re home. For example, face peels usually take our skin on a transition journey. So this is the perfect time. I get a lot of questions about face peels. Check out these skincare must-trys.
Masks
Keihl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Mask
Facial Peels
To learn everything you need to know about peels, check out this post by MUAC. It details the benefits and uses of each peel as well as the prices. Figure out which peel is best for your needs, understand how to use them safely, and learn the tips and tricks to at-home peeling. If done right, peels are good for getting rid of dead skin and promoting new cell development. If you suffer from acne and hyperpigmentation (dark marks on your skin), peels can really help get that under control. And if nothing else, you’ll get to enjoy a spa treatment at home!
The Ordinary Peeling Solution – One of the most affordable and effective skincare brands on the market. I do like their peel if you’re looking for a first peel, but I think it’s better to research the MUAC peels below too before making a purchase either way.
Other Must-Haves
MUAC Make Up Brush Cleaner – This is awesome to have in your makeup bag. It’s a spray that you can use to clean your brushes after every application. It makes brush cleaning much easier.
Tinkle Eyebrow Razor – Before waxing and then threading, this was how we made it through middle school. These are perfect for personal use because they help you shape your brows with more control than a regular razor and less pain than tweezers. It’s so easy to use, anyone can do it. Just don’t get too excited and shave off too much lol.
Ahava Sunscreen – I absolutely LOVE this sunscreen. It is one of the best I have tried. It doesn’t leave that white mask like the others and it’s not thick at all. It goes on like a lotion, with all the benefits of a strong SPF. But, that price tag. It’s worth it to me, but it depends on how you!
MUAC Enzyme Serum Sunscreen – This is an amazing alternative. Much better price tag with a lot of the same benefits. This sunscreen isn’t overbearing, either. No residue, and goes on so smooth. Sadly, it’s currently out of stock, but keep an eye out for it.
Mario Badescu Drying Lotion – I haven’t tried this yet but I’ve heard great things about Mario Badescu products in general. This one is apparently really good at drying out new pimples.
Keihl’s Sativa Oil – THIS. I swear by this for calming redness and slowing down new pimples. I won’t say too much but trust me, this is a must-have product.
Hair Care
Grace Eleyae Silk Bonnet – These bonnets are the bomb. They are lined inside with silk to help protect your hair and lock in moisture. There are several cute designs that you can wear at home and even out in public. For my ladies who wear the headscarf, this can be a lifesaver for your edges and your overall hair. They also have kids’ sizes and other products like headbands and silk-lined hats!
Do Gro Oil – Essential oils are so important for your hair. You can use pure oils like castor, jojoba, and coconut. But I have actually had a lot of success with this Do Gro Oil.
Flaxseed Gel Edge Control – One of my favorite edge controls on the market with amazing hold. I love too that I can trust the ingredients in it.
Aloe + Avocado Naturall Club Products – These are great products for moisture and hair care in general. Especially good for curly, coily, kinky hair, NaturAll products are for everyone.
Nail Care
Nail Hardner – This is a must to keep your nails from breaking. If you want to keep your nails clear and care for them at the same time, this is the product for you. You can also search for halal nail polish options.
Gel Nail Set – This is a super affordable set that comes with all the pieces for a gel manicure at home. I have one and I use it whenever I’m home and need a quick polish change or just feel like doing my nails. Once you have your starter kit, you can get other colors.
Shaving Essentials
Shaving is a choice, of course. But if you do, it’s good to know your options. I recommend waxing if you can. Ever since I started waxing, going back to shaving has been my worst nightmare. But here we are lol. If you’re going back to shaving like I am, there are a few things that can help you avoid the bumps and bruises.
Flamingo Razor – This razor is my absolute favorite! I don’t think we talk about how important it is for women to have good razors too. We always see the super cheap, flimsy razors (which cut you and trap bacteria) or we see the super expensive, bulky ones. Flamingo Razor will be the last razor you’ll ever need. They are the definition of self-care when it comes to shaving.
Nair Spray – For easy (and in my case, lazy) shaving, Nair is a good alternative to razors. I used to use the cream, but I like the Nair spray a lot better. It goes on easy and it removes hair much faster and better. Obviously, be mindful of the chemicals before jumping into this.
Vaseline – This is an age old secret. If you put some Vaseline on right after anything, whether it’s shaving, a paper cut, or even just to moisturize, your skin will thank you.

Take Care of Yourself
This time at home can seem long, but on the positive side, it gives us time to work on our at-home beauty routines and try new products. Most of us are struggling with caring for our hair, our nails, and our skin. But the reality is, we just need the right products and the motivation. Remember, personal care is a form of self-care so enjoy a spa day! Put on a mask, try a peel, do your own nails. You got this, sis!
